In 2006, high levels of bacteria from human and animals feces were found in some areas of Oakland Bay. This poses a health risk leading to restrictions on shellfish harvesting and recreational activities in parts of Oakland Bay.

In 2007, the Mason County Board of Commissioners responded to the shellfish restrictions by forming the Oakland Bay Clean Water District.

The Oakland Bay Clean Water District Advisory Committed was formed to create and implement a plan to correct pollution problems.
