Duty as a juror
The United States Constitution and the Washington State Constitution guarantee all people the right to trial by an impartial jury. Justice depends ultimately in large measure on the jurors who serve in our courts. As a juror, you must be fair and impartial. A juror’s actions and decisions must be free of any bias or prejudice. Jurors must apply the law given by the judge to the fact given during the trial to make a decision in a case. |

Service
| Jurors are summoned for a two-week term. That does not mean that they will be sitting at the courthouse for two weeks. They are to be available to call in during that time period for any trial that may begin. Usually a trial will last an average of two days, and a juror will serve only on one trial. There may be exceptions; a trial may extend beyond the 2-week term, however jurors will be advised of the estimated length of the trial at the time of the jury selection. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Request for excusal

Every attempt is made to minimize the impact of jury service to an individual. Very few people are excused from jury duty. Jurors will be excused only upon proof of poor health, undue financial hardship or extreme inconvenience, or for other reasons provided by law. (RCW 2.36.100) Any juror wishing to be excused from service must complete that portion of the juror questionnaire. Only the judge will review the request and grant the excuse. If a juror has a vacation planned or important jobs or appointments/events during the two-week period of selection, they may ask to have their jury duty postponed to a different time period. Please do not call the Clerk’s Office asking to be excused over the phone. The request must be in writing for the Judge to consider. |

The Clerk’s office mails the Summons. The summons are returned via mail or in person. They are sorted by the assigned weeks. The jurors call in on the assigned call-in dates, and listen to the instructions for the Clerk of the Jury Manager. The message will advise you of your appearance date and time, or when the next time is you should call. Payment

Jurors are paid $10 per day and .505 cents for round-trip mileage. By State law, an employer must allow a juror time off from work to serve on jury duty. It also says employers, "Shall not deprive an employee of employment or threaten, coerce, or harass an employee or deny an employee promotional opportunities" for serving as a juror. However, an employer is not required to compensate the difference in pay for jury service. |
